One Day in Chatan
A morning-to-night plan for American Village and the seaside. The key idea: outdoors early and late, indoors in the middle. Okinawa's midday sun is genuinely strong, and pacing the day this way makes it far more comfortable.
Before you start: look up the day's sunset time (roughly 19:30 in summer, around 18:00 in winter) and plan the evening backwards from it.
Morning — An empty shoreline and breakfast by the sea
The beach before the crowds is the best-kept part of the day. Walk the seaside edge of Depot Island or Sunset Beach while it is still cool and quiet. Then find breakfast: THE CALIF KITCHEN OKINAWA serves a morning menu from 8:00, and ZHYVAGO COFFEE WORKS OKINAWA opens at 8:00 for coffee with a view of the water.
Midday — Stay indoors while the sun is high
This is the time to be under a roof. Large shopping centers in the Mihama and Hanby areas, the cinema at Mihama 7plex, and the shops of American Village all work well. For lunch, this is the town for taco rice or a steak — see the food guide. It is also the natural fallback if the weather turns.
Late afternoon — Back to the water for sunset
As the sunset time approaches, head back toward the sea. Sunset Beach and the cafe terraces along the Depot Island waterfront both work. Sunset-facing seats are popular, so claim your spot early — see the Chatan sunset guide.
Night — Dinner under the lights
After dark American Village lights up. Steak, burgers and craft beer are the local signature — Steak House 88 Chatan American Village is open 11:00–23:00 (L.O. 22:00), and Chatan Harbor Brewery & Restaurant is open 17:00–22:00 (L.O. 21:30). A Blue Seal ice cream (open until 22:00) is the standard way to finish.
Travelling with kids
If you have small children, swap part of the midday block for Araha Park, which has a large ship-shaped playground and a beach — see the family guide and the beach guide.
