Sunset Half-Day Course

The sunset is the best thing Chatan has, and this plan is built entirely around it. Park once in the afternoon, then do everything on foot: shopping, a cafe by the water, and the sunset itself. Around 4–5 hours.

Before you start: look up the day's sunset time. Roughly 19:30 in summer and around 18:00 in winter — shift every time below to work backwards from it.

About 14:00 — Arrive and park

Park somewhere around American Village and leave the car there for the rest of the day. Weekends and late afternoons fill up, so arriving a little early helps. If the seaside lots are full, try a block further inland — see the parking guide.

About 14:30 — Browse Depot Island

Wander the colorful blocks of Depot Island — clothing, souvenirs and homeware shops. Walk out to the seaside side and you get the bright blue afternoon water. This is a good time to pick up souvenirs, before you commit to a seat for the evening.

About 16:00 — Take a seat at an ocean-view cafe

Get into a cafe before the light starts to turn. THE CALIF KITCHEN OKINAWA (open 8:00–22:00, L.O. 21:30) has terrace seating facing the horizon, so you can simply stay put and let the sunset come to you. ZHYVAGO COFFEE WORKS OKINAWA and Seaside Cafe Hanon are along the same stretch. Sunset-facing seats are limited and go fast — see the ocean-view cafe guide.

30 minutes before sunset — Head to Sunset Beach

If you would rather be on the sand, walk over to Chatan Park Sunset Beach. Go down to the shoreline and watch the sun sink straight ahead of you. The "magic hour" as the sky shifts color is the whole reason to be here — see the Chatan sunset guide.

After dark — Dinner in a lit-up American Village

Once the sun is down, American Village lights up and changes character completely. Steak, taco rice, burgers, craft beer — the food here reflects the town's American-base history. Pick somewhere that stays open late and you can easily add a second stop; see the food guide.
